Alojzy,

Where are your rules files? Also, can you include the output from when you
start Snort? I wonder if it is not finding your rule files, as your
RULE_PATH variables are all at the defaults with a relative directory and
you are starting snort from /usr/local/snort/bin. Also, the sf_portscan
preprocessor is commented out, so it won't trigger alerts when you run
portscans.

Some things I would recommend trying:

   - In snort.conf, set your RULE_PATH, SO_RULE_PATH and PREPROC_RULE_PATH
   to the directory where you put your rule files. When I set up Snort on my
   system, I put them in /etc/snort and code this in my snort.conf explicitly.
   - If you still don't get any alerts after this, open one of the pcap
   files you downloaded from openpacket.org using wireshark. Write a simple
   rule alerting on the content of the one or more packets from the pcap and
   put it in your local.rules file. Make sure that local.rules is  properly
   included in your RULE_PATH.
   - If the above works, comment out the custom rule you've written and try
   snort on your network. You should be good to go.
