I also like the easy-to-read approach to BPFs in Stephen
Northcutt's book "Network Intrusion Detection (3rd Edition)". 
It's not free but is a must-have for IDS geeks.

I don't think this is a dumb question, but yes ... a question
*can* be stupid.  Very very stupid.
