Here's a site that explains a method of using capacitors in-line with Pin1
on the hub to enable it to send 'noise' but no traffic, thefore facking the
hub/switch that a connection is actually present.

The easiest way is to make a receive only cable as shown here:

is some hubs/switches won't acknowledge the conneciton unless traffic is
received. If that's the case there is a work around using a high-pass filter
plugged into the transmit wires, but it's a little more complicated, but
there are guides out there.
